Wang Yi Meets with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son
2022-08-05 23:58

On August 4, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son at the latter's request on the sidelines of the series of foreign ministers' meetings on East Asia cooperation in Phnom Penh. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the consensus reached at the 14th meeting of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation to accelerate cooperation in key areas in the next stage.

Bui Thanh Son wished the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China a complete success, saying that the Vietnamese side will host a series of celebrations to demonstrate mutual support between socialist countries. Vietnam sees its relations with China as a strategic choice and a top priority of its foreign policy, and expects to maintain high-level exchanges between the two parties and two countries, carry forward the traditional friendship, consolidate political mutual trust, and deepen practical cooperation. The Vietnamese side reaffirms its firm commitment to the one-China policy, has released a joint statement thereon with other ASEAN countries, and stands ready to jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.

Wang Yi said that both being a socialist country led by a communist party, China and Vietnam have enjoyed comrade-and-brother like friendship, and always staunchly supported each other's major core interests. The two sides should take the building of a community with a shared future with strategic significance as their vision and goal, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning, and jointly develop the paths for developing countries to achieve modernization.

Wang Yi appreciated the Vietnamese side adhering to the one-China principle, emphasizing that the causes of the current situation across the Taiwan Strait are crystal clear, and so are the rights and wrongs thereof. The retrogressive acts of the US have not only encroached upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also undermined the common interests of the region and all developing countries, and violated the basic norms governing international relations. As the Chinese proverb goes, "With justice on your side, you can go anywhere; without it, you cannot take a step." Over 100 countries have expressed their commitment to the one-China principle, and UN Secretary-General has clearly stated that the UN will continue to adhere to the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. The Chinese side is ready to work with the Vietnamese side to fully demonstrate what a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership is all about, jointly uphold solidarity among socialist countries, and jointly defend international fairness and justice.
